Kashmir: A place entrapped in 'Power Politics'

When the whole world was busy in celebrating Eid, Kashmiri people were out on the streets demanding freedom from India. What else they need to prove that it is not the noisy minority who demand freedom? Syed Haamid Bukhari comments (with inputs from editor Freedom Writers blog)
A place which seems different if we look it from historical prism. A place of international importance, where as soon as water dried up leading to its formation, it started sucking blood of those who lived on it in order to maintain its balance, its land wants to remain wet. It hardly measures the viscosity of fluid in which it used to bath from centuries. A place where Rajneeti (politics) took thousand lives of innocent, a place where big shopping complexes and colonies are made above ‘unmarked’ and ‘unknown’ graves. Tragedies from time and again didn’t happen naturally, no cloud burst took place but rulers from time to time crushed the land beneath their feet, as our modern oppressors use chilly bombs through choppers.

Since 1947 Kashmir has never felt emotional attachment of Delhi with her. Every time voices of Kashmiri people were crushed. Since June 11, Kashmir staged a bandh (civil-curfew) and is still going on. Three months have completed but New Delhi could not come out with any political solution for Kashmir. Whenever meeting is held in New Delhi, we people wait for the result with this hope that outcome might be beneficial for Kashmir. But our hopes were always dashed to ground.

The CCS meeting was held at PM residence on 13th September which lasted for 3 hours. At the end no decision was taken and usual appeal was made to the people of Kashmir to maintain peace and harmony in valley.

UPA government is under strong political pressure. BJP is largest opposition, so it will never allow UPA to revoke AFSPA or give autonomy to Kashmir, leave alone Azadi (Freedom). BJP leaders always look at Kashmir from Pakistan's prism. They do their work strongly as opposition and dont allow PM to give any political package to Kashmir. Even Narender modi criticized Home minister's "saffron-terror" and asked him to give a name to the "Kashmir terror". Instead of showing sympathy with the people of Kashmir, Modi nominated them terrorists and asked Chidambaram to define Kashmiri terrorism's nomenclature. It is crystal clear that BJP will never allow UPA to solve Kashmir issue as per choice of Kashmiri people. It was a report published in TOI that 65% of the people in J&K demand freedom from India. The unfortunate statement of the BJP was “to tackle them with an iron hand who demand Azadi from India”. What else one can expect from BJP.

It is an irony that today the BJP has taken a hard line on Kashmir. This is the same party whose veteran leader Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee went to Lahore and declared from the base of Minar-e-Pakistan: "It is my dream and wish to resolve the Kashmir Issue." This is the same BJP who initiated peace talks with the then united APHC under the chairmanship of Syed Ali Shah Geelani. This is the same party that engaged Hizbul Mujahideen in a cease-fire and talks process in the Summer of 2000. This is the same BJP that declared a unilateral cease-fire in the Month of Ramadhan and then offered talks "under the constitution of Insaniyat". This is the same BJP whose Prime Minister Vajpayee laid out an inspiring agenda on Kashmir from Kumarakom on January 2, 2001: "We shall not traverse solely on the beaten track of the past. Rather, we shall be bold and innovative designers of a future architecture of peace and prosperity for the entire South Asian region".

On moral grounds GOI should solve Kashmir issue without taking into account opposition's demand but UPA always seem depressed by BJP domination and couldnt even accept a single demand of people of Kashmir. People of Kashmir are being killed by forces and UPA has become silent spectator watching this battle of man vs wild. In this battle bullets are being shot for stones. GOI fears that if Freedom-like anything is given to Kashmir, BJP might create trouble at national level and they will have to lose their seats in election.

Thus this biggest fear has made PM and his cabinet fellows scared. About 90 people have been killed in 3 months but GOI is still waiting for BJP's "yes-nod". How can they still expect patriotism from people of Kashmir?

When the whole world was busy in celebrating Eid, Kashmiri people were out on the streets demanding freedom from India. What else they need to prove that it is not the noisy minority who demand freedom? Neither any economic package nor any new Government in state would be acceptable to the people of Kashmir. They demand nothing less than Azadi.
